"Maybe This Year I'll Act My Age" is an EP inspired by a period when Karell was living an underage clubbing lifestyle while pretending to be older. The project emerged after Karell resumed dating his high school lover and temporarily set his music aside. He realized he was in love with the idea of her rather than who she had become, leading to their breakup. Reflecting on this, Karell remembered "Solo Un Sueño," a song he wrote for her. He struggled to re-record the track and had to pay the producer who had previously refused to send him the beat for "Tengo El Cora" to get the original vocals back. The EP’s artwork is inspired by Mario and Princess Peach, reflecting the couple’s shared experience of watching the movie together and mirroring Karell's emotional journey.

The EP also features "Exxclusiva," a club reggaeton track written in Miami with Frouzzen, who is associated with Anuel, Young Hollywood, and other songwriters. The song was inspired by Ryan Castro, and Karell made efforts to deliver it to Ryan Castro's team but never received a response. After its release, Karell conducted a media tour asking DJs to play "Exxclusiva," but the track struggled to gain traction due to Karell being an unknown artist at the time. The EP was released during Karell's pre-birthday weekend, but its impact was overshadowed by major releases, including "K-POP" by The Weeknd, Travis Scott, and Bad Bunny.
